Synopsis
Therese Blanc has worked her entire life to achieve the image of perfection. Now with a beautiful Boston apartment, her trust fund, and a new engagement to a handsome surgeon, it seems like all the pieces are coming together. All that remains is finding the perfect dress and completing her thesis on the “Psychology of the Modern Cannibal.” However, there’s something dark lurking underneath the surface, and she has one sinister fantasy to fulfil before walking down the aisle. That’s where Isaac Abrams enters, the man who openly accepts her for who she really is. Warts and all. As their online relationship intensifies, they agree to finally meet in person. But when curiosity kills the cat, Therese struggles to hide the cracks in her facade.
Production History: World Premier
about the playwright
Samantha Oty graduated from Radford University with a degree in English, technical editing and writing. She received her master’s degree in publishing from The George Washington University in 2017. Her first play, Demolition Lovers, was written in her sophomore year of high school and won the 2010 New Voices playwriting contest. Sadly, due to a conflicting trip to Europe, it would be another two years before she would see it performed. She has been writing plays ever since. Her work has appeared in Junto Magazine and in 5th Wall Production‘s Rough Draft Reading series. When not writing plays, she’s talking about horror movies with fellow writer and friend, Stormy Skies, on Real Horrorshow or writing new travel content for Postcard Press. Samantha lives in Virginia with her boyfriend and guinea pig.
cast and crew
McLane Nagy (Therese)
McLane is glad to be back on stage for her first theatrical experience since the Before Times. She was most recently treading the boards as Nell in ATC's "Or,". Thank you for choosing to spend your ability to be in public here supporting local story telling and thank you to Seth who has always believed in her artistically, even when she didn't believe in herself. |
John Grote (Toby)
John is excited to be in his first full-length at MadLab, after appearing in many Young Writers, Theatre Roulettes, and virtual theater productions over the last four years. John also has been featured in many local film projects, winning awards for his work in “Happy Endings” (Best Actor, 48 Hour Film Festival) and “the promotion” (Best Supporting Actor, 3 Weeks of Terror Festival). |
Sha-Lemar Davis (Wren)
Sha-Lemar (she/they) is a Dayton native who is thrilled to be back in front of a live audience. A Baldwin Wallace BFA grad, she has spent the past year wearing many hats in the digital theatre world. Some of their favorite roles include: Zee/Bibi in Weimar (world premiere), Addapearle in the Wiz, and Richard Plantagenet in Henry IV Part I. Sha-Lemar is grateful to be making her Columbus debut at MadLab and hopes to continue building relationships with new work theatres in the future. Sha-Lemar would like to acknowledge that as descendants of enslaved Africans they are a settler on indigenous land. Sha-Lemar acknowledges that the land she lives on is home to multiple indigenous tribes: Kaskaskia; Osage; Shawanwaki/Shawnee; Myaamia; Adena; Hopewell. Sha-Lemar recognizes that this verbal acknowledgement is not enough to achieve true sovereignty and commits herself to constantly working towards the liberation of indigenous peoples. |
Sean Taylor (Archie)
Sean has been working in the Columbus Theater scene since 2018, after moving from Kent.Ohio. He has appeared in several productions with the Actor's Theater of Columbus, most recently The African Company Presents the Tragedy of King Richard III and has appeared in one Madlab show prior, 2019's Happy Pills. He was also a featured actor in the film Poser. He'd like to thank his family for their continued love and support, and Hannah for always being there. |
Catherine Cryan Erney (Marie)
A BFA Graduate of The Ohio State University, Miss Cryan is a proud member of the MadLab Ensemble. She may be remembered for her recent turn as Mrs. Medlock in Secret Garden in Schiller Park - or for various roles at MadLab (CounterTop), Red Herring (A Doll's House Part 2), Evolution Theatre Co, Onyx Theatre, Original Productions Theater & Ad Hoc. With Sonda Rose Staley, she is a Founding Mother of The Tipping Point Theatre Co and hopes to see you all next spring at Into The Breeches. All puffery aside, she is thrilled to join this uber talented cast in this funny and challenging piece. |
